Escher at the Conservatory

This image reminds me of an Escher drawing. At first it looks like a real possibility, and then it looks like an impossibility. In this case, it's real. It just doesn't look real, at least to me.

Waterman Farm, Over the Top?

I woke up early yesterday morning and couldn't go back to sleep, so I decided to take my camera for a walk down to Waterman Farm, which is part of the Ohio State University. I arrived just as the eastern sky was starting to brighten. I shot a few photos of the lights toward downtown Columbus and then walked a bit north to the pond. There I saw a Great Blue Heron doing what GBHs generally do, standing very still. I took several photos of the GBH in silhouette as the sky brightened up. I plan on posting some of these photos later. On the way home, I saw a very bright area in the clouds, just above the silos of the farm, so I made a quick stop and shot a few more photos. I processed three of these as an HDR set and then did a lot of playing with the image using multiple passes through Color Efex Pro. If I remember correctly I used the tonal contrast, glamour glow, and graduated neutral density effects to create this painting look.

Orton Hall

Andi and I went on a photo walk around the Ohio State campus early yesterday morning. We arrived well before sunrise, and I first shot several morning light/lamps/reflections photos around Mirror Lake and then went wandering about. I ended up at Orton Hall, the Geology Department's building and started shooting HDR series there (I almost always shoot three photo bracketed series when my subjects are such that they don't move around much, if at all). I'm always looking for interesting foreground subjects for landscape or landscape-type photos (whatever those are... I just made up that term for the concept I have in mind), and when I saw this motorcycle parked in front of the building, I had to shoot it. So I did, and this is the result.
